Hello! Please tell me why the file name was obviously wrong when even historians or a supreme court use this term for that country until 1945 which I proved on the file disk. NNW 09:24, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, German Reich was the constitutional name for the German nation-state that existed from 18 January 1871 to 5 June 1945. Although commonly translated as "German Empire", the word Reich better translates as "realm" or territorial "reach", in that the term does not in itself have monarchical connotations. So Empire is only a translation of the name, but not the name itself. The real name was Deutsches Reich, where German Reich can only be the exact translation. Just as in Dutch they call it 'Duitse Rijk', what is an exact translation means German Reich. What do you mean with 'on the file disk'? Grtz. - Richardkiwi (talk) (talk) 12:57, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
PS also ask the requester, not only the file mover. - Richardkiwi (talk) (talk) 12:57, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Talk page (not discussion page, my mistake): File talk:German Reich 1937 adm location map.svg. I already told the requester but you are the one who renamed the file, so you took his point of view and you are responsible for it. It was your job to check the talk page because there was protest against the renaming. Of course it is possible to protest against a wrong renaming request. Otherwise a renamer wouldn't get to know that there are things to discuss. As there are different ways in which the original German name is translated (see my links) your "obvious error" is obviously wrong. And by this you had no valid reason to rename the file. Although I didn't see the talk page, I'm not wrong:

The history of the nation-state known as the German Reich is commonly divided into three periods:

  • German Empire (1871–1918)
  • Weimar Republic (1918–1933)
  • Nazi Germany (1933–1945)

If German Empire would be right, it would end in 1918. Taking the three periods and the year 1937, the only name is German Reich, or would you prefer the last name, Nazi Germany? I don't think so. - Richardkiwi (talk) (talk) 14:10, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I never said so. This is not about common or not common, it's about "obviously wrong". A minority usage of a name isn't wrong, it's just used by a minority. And if this minority can be found among historians or at a supreme court then this is okay. It doesn't matter which way you, Commons, Wikipedia or any majority would translate it, you have to respect the minority and the rules of renaming. "Majority" is no reason for it.
