There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the ? Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot 17:18, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

File:Peter Gallert-7302.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. odder (talk) 08:56, 10 January 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

South Africa video[edit]

Hi Victor, when Sue Gardner showed your video of the appeal from South African schoolchildren, that for me was the most moving moment in Wikimania this year. I've seen the page and photos from your trip, but I don't see the video itself online anywhere. I do a lot of outreach work in the education sector and I'd love to be able to show this very powerful piece (I already find your other work extremely useful and illuminating). Is it going to be online, or is it available already and I haven't found it? Thanks in advance for any response, MartinPoulter (talk) 15:48, 25 September 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi - it's not online yet, we're still tweaking details to maximize the impact the video generates when published. I'm happy you like it! Please be patient, we will likely publish a piece on the blog when it's public. Victorgrigas (talk) 15:58, 25 September 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

During Wikimania 2013 a few people took pictures of the arab wikipedians such as this one. On the same occasion, someone took a picture of all of them + 2 members of WMIL (myself and Chen Davidi). I was wondering if it was you. The picture should look pretty much the same (same background, same time) but it includes two more people. Thank you in advance. Tomer A. Pay attention to copyright

Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Thanks for uploading File:Lila's response to FDC Advisory Group recommendations.webmhd.webm. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Translation request at Wikipedia en español[edit]

Hi Victor Grigas;

You has left a translation request at Donald Trump's talk page at Spanish Wikipedia

By following the links provided by you, it is not clear if you requested a translation from Spanish to English or from English to Spanish. It seems you are requesting from Spanish to English, because the particular controversy «2015 Mexico comments» is no longer available in the English version. In Spanish something similar already exists in the section «Polémica sobre opinión de Donald Trump hacia la comunidad mexicana» (Controversy about Donald Trump's view towards the Mexican community).

Thanks for uploading File:Gereon Kalkuhl-6895.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

en:Wikipedia:Help desk#Year end video from 2014 mentions that File:Wikipedia Edit2014.ogv was deleted at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Wikipedia Edit2014.ogv. Nice video. (: One small suggestion: eliminate the last audio "twang" at the end. Otherwise, thumbs up. --Pine 06:45, 8 March 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How did you make this video? What program is needed to make a video like this?--Porbóllett (talk) 18:27, 27 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi! I'm happy to answer - First, I searched for still images, videos and gifs that might show a range of types of knowledge. I then looked on Free Music Archive ( http://freemusicarchive.org/ ) for music that might fit the style I was going for, and fit the licensing requirements. After I had a folder of these files, I used Final Cut Pro (proprietary software) to edit the footage together. For the .webm videos, I had to use another program to convert the .webm videos into .mp4. I took some time to trim and trim the footage until it had the right pacing. Even thought the video was short, it took maybe 40 hours total to put together when you include all the searching and editing. Almost any modern video editing software will be able to produce something like this, you just need to be sure that you are precise with your settings, and careful with your editing. I hope this answers your question! Please let me know if you need any further clarification.VGrigas (WMF) (talk) 14:57, 5 June 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm wondering if the title is a typo ("movemet" => "movement"). --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 13:05, 23 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Probably. I noticed that too, but I didn't want to change the file name from the original upload. VGrigas (WMF) (talk) 12:57, 24 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

#Edit2016 video[edit]

Hi VGrigas! Just wondering why the foundation didn't make a video for 2016? I loved the videos from 2014 and 2015! Cheers, Daylen (talk) 04:22, 11 August 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi! Well, it takes many weeks of very careful work to produce a video like that, and the second time around we didn't get the same response probably because it wasn't new and in 2016 for the third time around I had another project that was taking up my time. So I basically ran out of time to make it and because the response might also be low so we decided to just add a mini-edit2016 that was about 20 seconds into here:

[[2]]

This way, we can give have a theme like 'Facts Matter' and show footage we've accumulated during the course of 2016. It's very different, but the response to this has been good too. If you look in the metadata, it's also been forked into a few different languages. VGrigas (WMF) (talk) 14:42, 15 August 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Userpage size[edit]

Hi, Your userpage loads a lot of files which causes freezings/crashed on some browser. You ever considered moving stuff to /subpages? Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:28, 28 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi! is there a collapse/show code I could use? VGrigas (WMF) (talk) 14:29, 28 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Collapse will still load files in the background. Maybe you want to create gallery's in subpages and link to them. But it is just a suggestion, we don't have any policy regarding this. But i can image that a lot of people are closing the window when looking at your userpage, because of the aforementioned issues. Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:50, 28 November 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:On Wikipedia's Pinterest account.webm, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Messaging 100Admins separately is not seen very gladly[edit]

If you need technical help ask at Commons:Help_desk.

The sound-logos should be sent to an E-Mail-adress and a new account for this Competition should upload all sound-logos or publish them externally. The Authors will be published after the competition.

 — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 18:09, 17 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

That would be a possible technical solution. I agree that unsolicited mass-postings are a nuisance. Admins who are available can probably be reached through the Administrators' noticeboard, where also interested non-admins see the posting. I also don't know why admins are better suited to give their opinion than some other groups. If you expect a discussion, having that split over a hundred pages will be chaotic. And by a hundred postings you don't only annoy the admins, even I got my watchlist flooded. –LPfi (talk) 18:20, 17 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Victor, you've been around long enough to know that your action deserves a trout. This is not the right way to get input.
I answered on my talk, but so that others (and you) see it: Just ask participants to submit entries with a {{CC0}} license only. That way attribution is not mandatory and the logo can be used without having to link it every time (which is quite needed for a logo anyway). Multichill (talk) 19:30, 17 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The technical answer is that what you desire isn't possible within our existing license options - it's either no attribution required through the CC0 license (or a public domain declaration) as Multichill says, or otherwise it's attribution is compulsory (and unavoidable). The problem with hiding attribution but leaving the content available under a CC-BY type license is that people could acquire copies of the logo when it has the attribution hidden, and the logo is then used without appropriate attribution in perpetuity. The correct approach would be, I believe, as Johannes says, to have people submit their designs to an e-mail address. The submissions to the e-mail address would need to be held on a site away from Commons and only be available under an All Rights Reserved level of license for the duration of the contest. The images would then be released automatically after a set period (45 days, for example) under a CC-BY-SA or similar license. That's really the only way I can see that is fair for attribution purposes - admittedly going with a public domain release is easier, but we like giving attribution to our content creators, something we would want to continue with this new logo. Nick (talk) 10:11, 18 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would contend that it is possible. If the participants fully own the copyright of the proposals,* they can grant an additional license to show it during the contest without attribution. There are other ways to organize it, but I would simply ask them to upload them to commons normally under a free license, then -assuming you have such grant- show them with random names (and random order per page load) on an 'external' site (e.g. on toolforge).
I would question however why you think it is so important to hide the attribution during this vote. We have been doing contests in Commons for nearly two decades, and on Wikipedia earlier as well, and I don't think that being able to click on the file to find the author were an issue.
(*) Do note this would restrict the contest by forbidding proposals that are derivative of files requiring attribution.
Platonides (talk) 01:07, 19 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
For Commons, you need a perpetual free licence, so if the licence does not demand attribution, or only attribution to other parties or to a random pseudonym, then that is allowed also later. I would say that having the licence in effect only after the competition, and hosting the files on a different server until then, is the cleanest solution. Anonymous competitions are a bit complicated to arrange, but I don't see why it wouldn't be possible in this case. The other server should avoid anything that can be seen as affecting privacy, such as third-party javascript, or any third-party content. Does WMF policy allow non-free content on a *.wikimedia.org server in a case like this, where the non-freeness is temporary? –LPfi (talk) 14:56, 20 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Good question, I don't know if WMF policy would allow non-free content on a server for a temporary period. I'm sorry for the mass-messaging, I didn't intend to break a rule. The trout hurts, as it should. I'm sorry. I appreciate all the feedback. VGrigas (WMF) (talk) 15:18, 22 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
